A British climber has set a new world record for making a GSM call from the highest point on earth. Rod Baber made the call on Monday 21st May 2007, at 29,035 feet / 8848 meters on the highest peak of Mount Everest saying "Its cold, it's fantastic, and the Himalayas are everywhere." He also sent a text message from the summit, using his MOTO Z8 GSM mobile handset.

T he world's highest peak now receives mobile phone coverage due to a phone mast installed by China Telecom at the base camp in Rongbuk. However, Baber had to carry the phone's battery beneath his clothes to keep it warm enough to function in the -30º temperatures. The phone call was made to a special voicemail account and his text was sent to John Barlow of Motorola Inc.

Baber said, "Everest symbolizes the greatest challenge to any climber. To reach the summit and achieve world records with Motorola is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. My MOTO Z8 has totally enhanced the experience up here, giving me the added confidence and peace of mind to know that friends, family and even help were just a phone call away."

Sony Ericsson’s Cyber-shot range of mobile handsets come in some trendy designs. As they carry the name of Sony’s digital camera range, the expectation of similar performance is unavoidable. Then again, we have to take into account that we’re not talking about a dedicated device but a multipurpose gadget designed for various needs and requirements. We put the Cyber-shot C902 through some rigorous tests over the last ten days, and here’s our take on it.

Features
The C902 is definitely a good-looking handset. It’s sleek and slim, and the lines running along its edges make it even more eye-catching. The 'hidden' camera is a unique feature. All you need to do to activate or reveal the camera is slide up the upper portion of the handset (just above the display) and voila, out pops a 5MP camera with a flash and a sexy blue neon light. The secondary camera for video calling is located in the front and doesn’t need to be activated by sliding, it’ll work as is. That is if we ever get to use it for its primary feature.

The 2-inch display has a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and 256K colors. When the camera is activated, a set of touch-sensitive shortcuts (for camera options) appears all around the display. What I had a problem with is the keypad. Although it’s quite large, the keys are a bit hard and took some getting used to.

This 10.5mm thick handset has SE’s proprietary connector port for USB and a handsfree kit located on one side. Thankfully, like the Walkman series, the C902’s handsfree kit comes with a 3.5mm adapter. On the other side are the volume/zoom keys and the shutter release for the camera. It doesn’t have a hot swap slot for the M2 card (2GB provided) on the outside but you’ll find it under the rear panel. The rear panel is a bit tricky to open, so avoid fiddling with it unless necessary.

Performance
The C902 offers all the basic applications: a Calendar, a Task option, Notes, Timer Stopwatch, Calculator and a Code Memo feature. Like all SE handsets that are 3G capable and have a secondary camera, the C902 also has a dedicated application for video calling. The menus can also be customized – from a simple grid to rotating icons and single icon views – to make it look a bit more interactive.

The LG KC550 (also known as LG Orsay) is probably the best camera phone, which you have never heard of. KC550 the court can not be conceived as a shortened version of Viewty.

Camera
It has a 5 mega-pixels with a unit “Schneider-Kreuznach Objektiv-certified”. We are not sure what that means certification in this regard, but under the name verputzten on the back of the phone, it is necessary to ensure the quality of optical KC550. The camera has autofocus and what is manifest in a LED flash. The ceiling video capture, resolution 720 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second, so it is without doubt one of the best laptops on the market for video-recording.The acceleration of the blade can be used on the screen, flip-alignment portrait (tall) landscape (wide) the methods that you turn the handset, and can also be used for games although we believe it is of limited usefulness. The W270 is quite a stylish phone for the entry level segment. Its shiny, reflective black exterior looks quite cool. Beneath the cool exterior lies a subtle alert in the form of 3 icons. A green icon that flashes when a call comes in or if you have a missed call, a blue icon for messages, and an orange icon for battery status. The W270 has a small 1.6 inch display that looks even smaller considering the empty space around it. Its resolution is 128 x 128 pixels with 65K colors.

While the keypad is large with a 5 way nav-pad and dedicated keys for the music player and FM radio, it also proved the biggest problem. For some strange reason, the keypad is so much slower than my fingers. To elaborate – I could type faster than the phone could process. And even then it gave me more errors than I care to talk about. The space key didn’t seem to function half the time. As you can imagine, messaging was a real b*tch! Of course, I'm willing to give Motorola the benefit of the doubt that the issue is only with this particular piece.

On one side of the W270 is a 2.5mm handsfree socket and on the other side is where you’ll find the standard miniUSB connector that doubles for PC connectivity as well as the charger. Just above is a dedicated key that will take you right to the multimedia menu. The volume keys are also on the same side. Unfortunately, the handset doesn’t come with a hot-swap slot for the microSD card, so you will have to remove the battery.

Performance
The W270 is an entry-level handset with a few tweaks. It has a stereo FM radio, but lots of entry-level handsets (including Motorola's own W220) has it too. The pickup is just about okay. You can expect some static in a few places if you’re a daily commuter. The music player is actually quite good. It lacks options for music control, but the sound quality is better than average.
Other features include the usual – alarm clock, stopwatch, calculator and a calendar to save tasks or appointments. Thankfully the ringer and speaker phone are quite loud so you’ll always hear the alarm or phone even if you’re in another room.

Computer and bicycle manufacturer Xenitis has forayed into mobile phone manufacturing by floating a new company Xenitis Telecommunications. The company claims that in August it will launch the cheapest mobile handset in India for Rs 499.

The Xenitis group will be investing Rs 430 crore in next six months to expand its manufacturing facility at Sugandha in Hooghly, about 45 km from Kolkata, Mr Santanu Ghosh, Chairman and Managing Director of Xenitis, told press persons. “We have acquired 10 acres adjacent to our factory to expand our computer and laptop manufacturing units. We will acquire 10 acres more to house the mobile manufacturing unit. We will invest Rs 200 crore each in the two projects,” he said.

The design of the handset is cute. This sleek slider is smooth, sexy and though it's a bit heavy at 107g, that’s no bad thing. It provides a comfortable feel with a slight macho touch. It has a superb 2 inch display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and 256K colors. The unique feature with this phone is the lower touch-sensitive 1.4 inch display that sports the same resolution and color.

Instead of using normal navigation systems like most handsets, LG has gone with a touch-sensitive (with Haptics) virtual interface for navigation and accessing various options. It's called the InteractPad. The first handset to have a feature like this was Samsung’s U900 Soul, though that's not as vibrant.

While navigation option much better, which may take a bit of getting used to if you have fat fingers, I’m tempted to toy with the idea of LG bestowing the KF600 with a full-length display. It would increase the size of the viewing space. The bottom portion could still be made touch-sensitive. Then again, would the handset be able to support that technology? Hmm... maybe, maybe not. All told, the InteractPad is a very intuitive system and works with virtually no hitches.

On one side of the handset is a proprietary USB/handsfree/charging port. Under that is a dedicated camera key that can also be used to unlock the navigation pad. A music player shortcut key is located on the other side, just below the volume/zoom keys. The most disappointing thing with the design is the lack of a hot-swap slot for the microSD card, though oddly enough it has one for the SIM. There’s also a stylus that can be attached to the handset via a string and, like the Viewty’s, this one too looks rather like a lipstick.

The interface is refreshingly new and chic. The phone is one of the thinnest in the Touch stable, and will hence appeal to the style-conscious. It’s important to keep in mind that the Diamond has an internal memory of 4GB, which really works to its advantage.
At 102 x 51 x 11.5 mm, this phone has shed a lot of bulk, and is easily the lightest Windows Mobile phone in the market at 110g. The front comprises the 2.8-inch touchscreen with the lower band housing the four function keys and the navigation button.
Though not raised, the buttons are not touch-sensitive. Having no clutter to bother with, the buttons work as they should, even if the nav-pad can be a bit off. Without nails, you might just end up hitting the Cancel or Call button.
